Novak Djokovic is a proud Serbian and he didn’t “betray” his nation even when he needed it.
The world no.1 revealed an interesting story when back in the day at the beginning of his career he was offered to change Nationality and become British. Tha would have meant for him and his family a much easier life, but eventually, they declined.
During one of his interviews with Graham Bensinger, Nole commented:
“I was doing really well in the junior international tournaments so tennis agents spotted me. And we got an offer to change our nationality to British nationality. It was a very tempting offer as it would have solved all of our problems but we didn’t go for it.”
Personally, I didn’t want to do it because I didn’t want to go to England where I didn’t know anybody. I wanted to stay where I had my friends, my life, my language, and my country.”
When explaining why they declined to accept the offer, Novak’s mother commented:
“The kids probably would have had a better school, better facilities for practice and everything. But nobody would have been happy. I think that Novak never would have played for England or the United Kindom
as he played for his country.”Novak Djokovic’s ranking and performance in 2020
