Serena Williams reveals her struggle for being black in the tennis world at the beginning of her career. VIDEO

Serena goes back in time to remember the problems she and Venus had to face at the beginning of their amazing career!

Serena Venus Williams and Naomi Campbell

Serena Williams and Venus Williams are icons and inspirations for the upcoming tennis players and beyond. However, during a recent video call with Naomi Campbell, Serena admitted she had a lot of problems with Venus at the beginning of her career being an African-American.

According to Serena, the main problem was that tennis was dominated by white players for long and sponsors, fans and organization.

The tennis legend commented:

“Having to deal with different sponsors, they weren’t as supportive because I’m an African-American what was “a black basically.” So that is also interesting. Then just you know when you are coming into a sport like tennis where historically it has been hundreds and hundreds of years of people that are white and that are successful and that are doing really well.”

Another argument that Serena had to overcome was that tennis was for people coming from a rich environment. She said that eventually: “Venus and I were able to change that narrative and say like actually people who have less can do better because they were want to work even harder and they want to be able to improve the situation.

There were a lot of things that we had to go through. For me, I had that awful experience of being booed by the entire crowd.”
