Andy Murray celebrating the Virtual Mutua Madrid Open win

Andy Murray achieved “virtual greatness” after winning the inaugural Mutua Madrid Open Virtual Pro after a tough battle with David Goffin that ended at the breaker.

The Brit was 4-5 in the decisive tiebreak to conquer the match after painting the lines a couple of times before ending the match with a “great” cross-court forehand. Andy wasn’t able to contain his happiness after winning the match after a 33 minutes struggle.

After the tournament, Murray commented: “We raised a lot of money for some good causes. It was nice, personally, to spend a little bit of time chatting with some of the players. It is something that I have missed during this period and something that I have been used to for the past 12, 14 years of my life. It was something I have never done before. Thanks to everyone who put the event on.”

This was Andy’s second tough win of the day as he overcame Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinal 7-6 (6) a few hours before.

The donation

Andy won $45,000 in prize money. Half will be donated to the NHS and the other half to the players’ relief fund that helps his lower-ranked colleagues struggling with the current lockdown.
