Simona Halep surprised the tennis world in 2019 after she demolished the great Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final to win the Championships on what is arguably her least favorite surface. Simona was eager to defend her title this year, but unfortunately that will not happen after on Wednesday it was announced that Wimbledon will not be played in 2021.

The Romanian sensation released the following “optimistic” statement on social media:

“So sad to hear it confirmed that Wimbledon won’t take place this year. Last year’s final will forever be one of the happiest days of my life! But we are going through something bigger than tennis now, and the best news is, Wimbledon will be back next year. And it means I have even longer to look forward to defending my title there! Stay strong everyone and keep believing.”
