Why Bianca Andreescu will not be penalized after retiring from Indian Wells. OFFICIAL MEMO

Andreescu

Bianca Andreescu was about to lose tons of points after she announced her withdrawal from the last edition of the event in Indian Wells where she was the defending champion. However, after the tournament was canceled (or postponed) and the entire tour froze until (at least) the 7th of June, she won’t lose her points. Therefore, Bianca will stay no.6 until that date (at least).

This is the memo that the WTA sent to their players.

“A Frozen Ranking has been processed as of March 16th on which…
Points from 2019 Indian Wells will remain on the WTA Rankings
The ITF W25 and W15 events that were played March 2 and March 9 were added to the March 9th ranking.
There was not a scheduled ranking update for March 16 as it was the middle week of Indian Wells.
The Player and Tournament Councils, WTA leadership team, along with the ATP and ITF, continue to work on the process moving forward.
We are working on options for when play resumes. As you can imagine it is a complicated process and it will take some time as the goal is to be as thoughtful and balanced as possible. These rankings discussion and cancellations will continue to include addressing Olympic qualifications, workinq closely with the ITF and Olympic Eliqibility Committee.”
