UPDATES. Why the Roland Garros might be canceled in 2020 after the Coronavirus oubreak

Roland Garros and Coronavirus

The entire world sank in uncertainty after the outbreak of the Coronavirus spread all over the planet. Similarly, there is a lot of confusion especially about the top tennis tournaments and the possible resumption of the competition since there are many complex issues to deal with.

The ITF and the WTA announced the stop of their tour for the next 5 weeks while the ATP Tour won’t take place in the following 6 weeks. The Roland Garros is meant to start the 26th of May and that means that they will have 10 weeks from now to get ready, but will they?

The French organization managed to completely rebuild the Philippe-Chatrier Court in record time with the aim of mounting the roof the next year. However, the concerns now are about the concrete opportunity for the event to take place.

Why the French Open may be off

Corona Virus in France

(Coronavirus in France in the Infographic) It’s quite clear that there are no plans to cancel the slam this year. However, there are huge practicalities that need to be considered especially in this moment of strong uncertainty.

Guy Forget, the French Open tournament director, was rather explicit when talking with L’Equipe to say:

“There are still a few months to go before the event. For the time being, we have no intention of canceling the event. The French Tennis Federation will, as is its responsibility, follow the government’s lead when making any such decisions.

If it is going to be viable there has to be time. But at the same time, it’s going to arrive rapidly. The unknown is the amount of time it is going to be going on.”

As per the graphic, France hasn’t experienced yet the peak of the Coronavirus outbreak.
