Spain upsets Serbia to win the 2013 Hopman Cup

Big upset at the 2013 Hopman Cup. Serbia looked to be the pre-destined to win this title, but eventually Spain had a remarkable day to upset the favorites.

Djokovic – Verdasco 6-3, 7-5

This was a tough match for Nole as Fernando was in a really good shape to lead 2-0 in the second set (after losing the first 6-3) and to bring Nole to the 12th game of the second set. Eventually the stronger and more experienced player won it… but that wasn’t easy.

“It’s difficult to play against any player if he hits the winners from both sides and is very aggressive,” Djokovic said. “He was serving at over 200 kph consistently well and it was really hard for me to come back to the match.”

Medina Guarrigues – Ivanovic 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2

Good stuff for the Spaniard as she won a tense 3 setter against the former world no.1. Ana looked nervous from the very beginning and that was a very good sign for the Spaniard that got one of her most prestigious victory of her career a after 2 hours and 38 minutes.

“I was dreaming all of my career of winning against a great player in a big stadium, and I’m 30 years old and finally I take it so I’m really happy,” Medina Garrigues commented . “The crowd is like a Grand Slam and they were supporting me because they wanted a live mixed doubles.”

Verdasco-Medina Garrigues vs Djokovic – Ivanovic  6-4, 7-5

Spain managed to win the Hopman Cup at the mixed doubles where the Serbain team couldn’t even bring them to a decider.

Interesting enough, Djokovic and Ivanovic played 3 times the Hopman Cup without being able to win it once
