CORONAVIRUS. Why the Miami Open will probably be cancelled after Indian Wells, unless…

Coronavirus Miami Open

It’s a tough moment for the tennis world as one of the most important tournaments of the year (Indian Wells) has been canceled due to the threat of the Coronavirus. The event was canceled (or postponed as per the organization) as there was one person that was positive to the test of the COVID-19 in the area. Furthermore, Indian Wells and its surroundings are well-known for being inhabited mostly by senior citizens that are more prone to die because of the virus.

Will the Miami Open also be canceled or played closed doors?

At this point, there are strong doubts about the opportunity to play also the Miami Open that (in theory) should commence the 23rd of March.  In fact, Miami is an area that is “less controllable” than Indian Wells and there are already some people infected by the virus in the area.

In addition, the City of Miami has already issued a directive to postpone the Ultra Music Festival that was meant to take place just before the Miami Open (20, 21, 22 of March). Therefore, it’s plausible that the ATP1000 will also be postponed or canceled.

This was the communicate

“Dear Ultranauts,
It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that The City of Miami has issued an official directive requiring that the 22nd edition of Ultra Music Festival, originally scheduled for March 20, 21 and 22, 2020 will be postponed to March 26,27 and 28, 2021. Due to the Florida Governor’s declaration of a public health emergency and Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s Interim Guidance for COVID-19, it is impossible for the City to provide access to Bayfront Park at this time.
We completely understand how extremely frustrating this is because so many of you are looking forward to coming to Ultra, having already made travel arrangements.”

There is also the hypothesis that the Miami Open will be played closed doors. Apparently that was proposed to the Indian Wells organization, but the idea was rejected.
