Gasquet downs Davydenko to win the 2013 Qatar Open

Good start of the season  also for Richard Gasquet. Even if the tournament wasn’t blessed by any “big 4” there were some solid players such as Ferrer and an inspired Davydenko to overcome in order to win the title.

Gasquet – Davydenko  3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3

Not an easy stuff. Nikolay is a always a tough competitor in Doha and he is defenately better than his current ranking (44). The Russian was comfortably leading 1 set and a break up to have several break points to lead 5-2 in the second set. Then something broken in his game and Richard got back in style to win the second set at the tiebreak and win the decider 6-3 in 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Davydenko’s poor fitness played a crucial role in the match.

From Gasquet

“This is a big success for me, and it was very tough,”said  Gasquet “Nikolay was tired and I fought as much as I could. It was a good win against him because he plays so fast.

It’s also incredible to win here where so many famous players have won in the past.”

Thsi is the 8th career title for Gasquet.

From Davydenko

“I am proud of my tennis, but disappointed in my physical condition,” said Davydenko, “But I shall work in the next week to get it as good as I can,”

Nice to see such a talented player as Richard Gasquet winning this prestigious title and very nice to see Davydenko back to an important stage.
