His victory, the fifth in this tournament, puts him three shy of Roger Federer’s record of eight Dubai Open championships. Moreover, he now has 79 career ATP titles. So far, he has also recorded an 18-0 match record for 2020. This is his best year-to-date performance since 2011 when he began with a 41-0 tally.
His victory in Dubai gave him his second major title for the 2020 season. It can be recalled that he fended off a massive challenge from Dominic Thiem in the Australian Open final last month.
Juan Carlos Ferrero predicts Djokovic will overtake Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal
In other news, former world no. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero reveals that he thinks Novak Djokovic will soon hold the record for most wins in the Grand Slams.
According to Ferrero, Djokovic’s age puts him in an advantage over rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. He said that he has a huge chance of leapfrogging Federer’s 20 and Nadal’s 19 Grand Slam wins in the near future.
He also thinks that Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas have the biggest chance of breaking the Big Three’s Grand Slam dominance. But he also believes that the Big Three will still be major forces in male tennis in the next few years.
Major movement in ATP world rankings
Meanwhile, tennis fans are seeing major movement in the world rankings of the ATP Tour after successive tournaments in the past weeks. After a runner-up finish in the Australian Open, Austrian player Dominic Thiem reached a career-peak of no. 3 in the rankings. He unseated Roger Federer, who has been inactive since the Melbourne games.
Federer is unlikely to add more points in his tally because he will be out of the ATP Tour until June. The Swiss Maestro will be undergoing a knee injury in the next few months. With Federer out, Thiem could stay in the top three for weeks.
