LIVE RANKINGS. Thiem overtakes Federer as the new world no.3

Dominic reaches new heights in the rankings

Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer

Dominic Thiem had a fantastic start of the year after he reached the final at the Australian Open before losing to a die-hard Novak Djokovic. Ranked no.4, the Austrian sensation had the great opportunity of becoming the new world no.3 last week as he was the seed no.1 in the ATP500 in Rio. Dominic was the hot favorite to win the event and he had to “just” reach the semifinal to overtake Roger Federer for the 3rd spot in the rankings. However, things didn’t go that well for Thiem that was surprised in the quarter by the Italian qualifier Gianluca Mager.

Why Thiem will be the new world no.3

Even if Dominic is not competing this week, he is currently no.3 in the live rankings since Federer dropped 500 points since he won the ATP500 in Dubai last year. Given the fact that unfortunately, the Swiss Maestro has been sidelined by a knee surgery, he won’t be able to defend his title. Therefore, Dominic will be definitely ranked no.3 (career-high) from next week.
