Agnieszka Radwanska has been one of the big surprises of 2012. She is definitely an unorthodox and super entertaining player with her unpredictable tennis. Fans love her and had great fan watching her in Auckland.

Radwanska – Arn 6-2 6-2

The Pole seems to be determined to keep her fantastic march also in 2013 to start in great fashion in Auckland. Even if she had to face a lucky loser, the first round wasn’t as easy as Greta Arn was the 2011 winner of this tournament.

“I really felt good on court but there were a lot of tight, long games. The score looks easy but the match was not that easy. I had to fight for every ball to the end of the match.” said Agnieszka.

Talking about her chances to win this tournament she added “I came here to win. Everything is good so far. Why not take this trophy?”… nothing wrong with that 😉

Other matches

There has been a score of upsets (something typical for this part of the season when most top players are not 100% ready to fight at their best).

Last year’s champion Zheng Jie lost 7-5 6-1 to American Jamie Hampton. Former world no.2 Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to  6-7(5) 6-2 7-5 to unseeded Dutch player Kiki Bertens. Sorana Cirstea retired in the first round after losingthe first set 6-3 with Heather Watson for a viral illness.

Let’s hope the other top players will keep their march.
