Teary Petkovic retires from the Hopman Cup for injury

Very bad news for Andrea as once again she has been defeated by an injury.

The entertaining German has always been plagued by injuries. In 2008 she ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament in the joint. This year she suffered an horrible injury at the 2012 WTA Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart at her ankle. (see video below).

Andrea looked to be back on track when she managed to reach the final in Beijing to even bagel Radwanska in the second set.  She was definitely ready for a good comeback in 2013 to receive this unfortunate and horrible blow.

What happened in Perth?

Andrea was playing her match against 16 years-old Ashleigh Barty to try to draw with Australia as Haas was defeated by Tomic in an epic three setter.

The German won the first set 6-4 to then suffer from a harsh pain to her knee. Time to go on the bench a call a trainer. Petko busted in tears as she understood it wasn’t a small problem. The she had to retire.

From Ashleigh Barty

“Obviously it is unfortunate for Andrea. She is a great player and I think she may have stopped prematurely because she has been so tentative with her injuries over the past two years, but hopefully she can recover well and play all right in the Australian Open,” she said.

If the injury stays Andrea will miss the Australian Open. Let’s hope for the best as we want to see some Petko dance in Melbourne.
