Serena Williams about the difficulties of being a working mother

The 23-time Grand Slam champion has revealed that she is often exhausted and stressed before she plays at tennis tournaments.

Serena Williams about the difficulties of being a working mother

Serena Williams became a mother in September 2017 when she had her daughter, Olympia. The former world number one found out that she was pregnant at the Australian Open earlier that year, a tournament she went on to win. The 38-year-old returned to the court in 2018 and has made it to several Grand Slam finals. Now that she has responsibilities as a mother off the court, Serena has admitted that it is not easy balancing her professional career with her family.

Being a mom is not easy

In a recent Instagram post, Serena said she now has an appreciation for working mothers all over the world. She posted a picture holding on to her sleeping daughter while they were in the backseat of a car. Serena did not anticipate the picture and she has a solemn look on her face. When she saw the picture, later on, she decided to post it to highlight what mothers go through when taking care of their children. “I am not sure who took this picture but working and being a mom is not easy. I am often exhausted, stressed, and then I go to play a professional tennis match. We keep going. I am so proud and inspired by the women who do it day in and day out. I’m proud to be this baby’s mama.”

Serena’s record since her return to the court

Serena has maintained belief in herself even after undergoing a title drought since her return. She won her first title singles since 2017 at the Auckland Open last month. She is yet to win a Grand Slam title since becoming a mother despite reaching three finals. She lost the 2018 US Open final to Naomi Osaka and last year, Simona Halep and Bianca Andreescu defeated her in the finals at Wimbledon and the US Open respectively. At the Australian Open last month, she exited in the third round after suffering defeat to Wang Qiang.

Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, has admitted that they will have to come up with a new strategy to get Serena over the hump. The former world number one is only one title short of tying Margret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slams. In a recent interview, Mouratoglou expressed confidence that with a few changes, Serena will finally match the Grand Slam record. “She believes she can make it and I believe it too. She’s not that far, but we have to change a few things.”
