After suffering a lengthy losing stretch in his singles career, Jack Sock finally won a singles match on Wednesday. The American’s last singles victory came at the Laver Cup over Fabio Fognini. Fans could be forgiven for thinking that the 27-year-old was jinxed after he consistently lost in the first round at several tournaments. He finally broke his unlucky streak by this week after he defeated Radu Albot in the first round of the Delray Beach Open.
It means a lot to me
Jack overcome the tournament’s defending champion 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 to claim his first singles victory of the year. It was an emotional triumph for the American who broke down into tears after wrapping up the win. It was his second ATP tour singles’success since 2018. He had to work hard to beat his Moldovan opponent, saving a match point when the score was 5-6 in the third set to keep his hopes for a victory alive. In an interview after the match, the American said the win meant a lot to him. “It’s been a tough couple of years, especially last year with not even playing that much. I was pretty close to not playing the sport anymore, so it means a lot.”
Jack’s has struggled since breaking into the top ten in 2017
The American has endured a rough couple of seasons since breaking into the top ten in 2017. That year, Jack won the ATP 1000 Masters in Paris and qualified for the ATP Finals after achieving a career-high number eight ranking. Since then, a series of injuries have limited his playing time on the court. A niggling hip injury compromised his 2018 season and led to him falling out of the top 100. He made his comeback at the Australian Open last year but suffered a thumb injury that required surgery and kept him off the court for six months. He returned in July and would record his only singles victory of the year at the Laver Cup in September. More injury issues led to him retiring from his last two matches of the year.
This season, he played at the New York Open but lost in the first round to Marcos Giron. Despite his early bad luck, Jack says that his team helped him overcome his struggles. “Without the people in my corner, I probably wouldn’t be here. Thanks to them for keeping my belief up.” He will face Steve Johnson in the second round of the Delray Beach Open on Thursday.
