Why Serena Williams loves playing for her country

Serena Williams is one of the brightest stars in the American tennis scene. The 23-time Grand Slam winner recently revealed that she enjoys representing her country in the tennis courts.

According to Williams, she felt pressure playing for her country in the 2020 Fed Cup. She described it as being a different feeling when you compare it to her singles matches because she does not want to disappoint her teammates and coaches. She, however, clarified that the experience was still fun. The pressure that Williams felt is understandable. At this point, she has become an American tennis icon. This only means that the bar for her is so high.

More American players making presence felt

It seems younger American players are getting inspired by the legend that is Serena Williams.

As the tennis legend is approaching the twilight years of her glorious career, some young Americans are on the rise in the WTA Tour. Among them is 15-year old Coco Gauff.

Gauff, who trains with Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou, became a media darling after defeating Venus Williams in last year’s Wimbledon. Since then, she has defeated former world no. 1 Naomi Osaka, top 10 Dutch players Kiki Bertens, and 2017 French Open winner Jeļena Ostapenko in different tournaments.

Amanda Anisimova is another young American who has the potential to become great in the future. The top 30 players has already recorded wins against more experienced players like Eugenie Bouchard and Simona Halep.

Team USA in 2020 Fed Cup

Serena Williams recently joined the American delegation to the 2020 Fed Cup qualifying rounds. Unfortunately, she was not able to deliver more than one win after facing off and losing in a singles match against Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova. It marked the first time that she lost in a Fed Cup in her career. It was a good thing that her fellow teammates still managed to deliver a win for the U.S. vs Latvia.

As the most experienced member of the team, Williams can hold her own against many opponents. But that did not stop other members of the team from being supportive of the tennis icon.

According to team member Sofia Kenin, she was cheering loudly for Williams during her game against Sevastova. She said that she felt nervous watching the game. When the 23-time Grand Slam winner eventually lost, Kenin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands had to pull off an impressive doubles victory for the American team.

The rousing win adds to an already productive February for Kenin. A few weeks ago, the young American took home the 2020 Australian Open title, making it her first Grand Slam win.

The U.S. team is now scheduled to play in Group C of the reorganized Fed Cup. They will face off against Slovakia and Spain on April 14-19 in Budapest, Hungary.
