How the “Tsitsipas souvlaki” is helping the bushfire in Australia

The Bushfires in Australia attracted the attention of various people and organizations who, in multiple ways, decided to curb the disaster through donations, rescue operations, and support. Ever since the crisis took place and caused the death of animals and the displacement of people ahead of the Australian Open, a lot of tennis enthusiasts came in to support the affected victims. The bushfire relief program was established to contribute funds to help in the rescue and restoration activities.

Some of the tennis players who took part in contributing to the bushfire relief include Nick Kyrgios, who made a declaration to donate $200 for every ace he manages to hit this summer. Serena Williams gave the entire tournament prize money of $43,000 to help in curbing the bushfire in Australia. She received the amount after winning the ASB Classic in Auckland. This was her first title after becoming a mother and, to some extent, signaled that perhaps the 38-year-old might be winning a grand slam title soon. However, that never came into frustration during the first singles major tournament in Australia, where she was eliminated in the third round by Wang Qiang. Alexander Zverev, on the other side, pledged to donate $10,000 to the Bushfire relief for each match he won at the Australian Open.

Tsitsipas helping bushfire relief

Stefanos Tsitsipas is another tennis player who has contributed to the bushfire relief efforts in Australia. Through the sales emanating from “Tsitsipas Souvlaki,” both the Greek professional tennis player and Stalactites have so far raised $19,652. The money is set to be donated to Wildlife Victoria and Country Fire Authority (CFA). The donation comes after Stalactites, a Melbourne Greek institution, and its owners had already donated $10,000.

The culture of christening souvlaki

The “Tsitsipas Souvlaki” is a result of Stalactites’ ongoing culture of christening souvlaki just after their own Australian Open Hellenic Heroes. This tradition began in 2006 when their regular customer, Marcos Baghdatis, made it to the final to face Roger Federer. Therefore, the restaurant came up with a “Baghdatis Souvlaki” in a bid to honor him for achieving that feat. Last year, at least 50-percent of the proceeds obtained from the Tsitsipas Souvlaki went to helping a Children NGO. The limited Tsitsipas Souvlaki was launched this year to help curb the bushfire crisis in Australia. The souvlaki retailed at (AUD17) and was available to customers from 17th January to February 2nd during the Australian Open.
