US Open men’s final to be played on Monday from 2013

Good news from the US Open.

The American major was the only one to stage the final the day after of the semis creating huge problems to players… you know playing a semi at the US Open can be quite taxing from a physical point of view… and playing the final the day after could be deadly!

In fact, this back to back arrangement was quite unfair if a player had a tough match in the final four to make it impossible to recover and win against a fresher opponent. Remember when Rafa defeated Federer in the 2009 Australian Open final after winning a super epic semis against Verdasco 2 days before? That would have been absolutely impossible in a back to back final.

How is it going to be?

The “super Saturday” will stay to stage the women’s final and the men’s semis, but the men will play the final only on Monday to allow an extra day for resting.

Prize Money

The prize money will be increased of $4 million to a record $29.5 million. It is still unclear how it will be distributed… we hope they are going to give a significant boost to the lower ranked players.

From Murray

Andy is very happy by the decision to comment

I’m pleased that the USTA has modified the US Open schedule to include a day of rest between the semifinals and final,

Together with the prize money increase, its good that they’ve taken on board the players’ concerns.”

From Serena

“Both the prize money increase and the addition of a day of rest are great for the players,” said Serena . “These moves make the tournament stronger than it’s ever been for all players.”

Good Stuff!
