Renee Zellweger pays tribute to Serena and Venus Willams in Oscar acceptance speech

The 92nd yearly Oscar academy awards ceremony was pretty special for Reene Zellweger. She won the best actress award for her role as Judy Garland in “Judy.” This came as her second academy award in her career as an actor. Reene Zellweger won her first Oscar after featuring in 2003’s Cold Mountain on a supporting role.

The star was invited to the stage to collect her award and made a brief speech. She took advantage of her acceptance speech to hail the unending legacy left behind by Garland, who died in 1969 at the age of 47 years. She went further to demystify the importance of remembering and celebrating such prominent heroes in society.

She appreciated the conversations that continue to pay tribute to Judy Garland. Zellweger believes that this act of celebrating heroes is a great way of not only getting inspiration but also uniting people.

“When we celebrate our heroes, we’re reminded of who we are as one people united. And, no Judy Garland did not receive (an Oscar) in her time. I am certain that this moment is an extension of the celebration of her legacy that began on our film set, and it is also representative of the fact that her legacy of unique exceptionalism and inclusivity and generosity in spirit. Transcends any one artistic achievement,” she said.

Reene Zellweger fended off competition from the likes of Charlize Theron (Bombshell), Saoirse Ronan (Little Women), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) and Cynthia Erivo (Harriet).  The award ceremony was aired on ABC right from the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood.

Apart from appreciating the good work done by Judy Garland, Zellweger recognized other heroes. She named several popular figures she believes to have Garland’s attributes. Some of the celebrities she identified include Harriet Tubman, Fred Rogers, Selena, Martin Scorsese, Serena, and Venus Williams.
