Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal played out an anticipated exhibition match in Cape Town this past Friday. The Match in Africa charity event aimed to raise money for the Roger Federer Foundation. In addition to their singles match, Federer teamed up with Bill Gates while Nadal joined forces with Trevor Noah for a one-set doubles match.

Making the announcement on social media, Federer thanked his Nadal, Gates, and Trevor for making the event a success. In an Instagram post, the Swiss player said it was a dream come true to play in his mother’s home country for a good cause. “It was always a dream of mine to play in South Africa for my foundation. I am so proud to say we raised over $3.5 million this evening.”
The money raised will support early childhood education in Africa
The money raised will go towards the Roger Federer Foundation’s efforts of supporting early childhood education in Africa. The foundation carries out projects in Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. It also has projects in Switzerland. Federer started the charity organization in 2004. In a past interview, the 38-year-old has expressed his pride in the work the foundation has carried out over the years.“I’m very proud of my foundation that’s been running for 15 years. We’ve had an impact on one million children, giving them a better quality of education.”
After a successful charity exhibition, Nadal and Federer will turn their attention to the ATP tour. Nadal will hope to bounce back after losing the world number one position to Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard did not make it past the quarterfinals of the Australian Open while his Serbian rival won the event to leapfrog him in the standings. Nadal will play in the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco Mexico later this month. Federer had a good run in Australia, making it to the semifinals before suffering defeat to Djokovic. He will play at the Dubai Tennis Championships which begin on 17th February.

What an unforgettable night: we raised 3.5 million USD for the vulnerable children in the region, achieved a world record with more than 51,000 spectators at a tennis match and had so much fun. Thanks to the three inspiring philanthropists Rafa, Bill and Trevor for having shared this emotional moment. Thanks to the hundreds of people who organized this Match in Africa and created a high class event.
