Djokovic, Serena Williams and Vergeer awarded ITF world champions

Another great recognition for Nole and Serena.

All the awards have been assigned to the world no.1 in their categories. The only exception was Azarenka.

Djokovic – Men

Nole won the award for the second consecutive year.

The strongest contender was Murray as the Scott had an inspiring season by winning the Olympics and the US Open. But Nole had a better 2012 to win the Australian Open, the World Tour Finals, Miami, Shanghai, Toronto and Beijing

“I am proud to have been named ITF world champion for the second successive year,” Djokovic said.

“It was very difficult to follow up such a successful season in 2011, but it was extremely satisfying to win another Grand Slam title, reach two other major finals and finish the year at number one.”

Serena – Ladies

This was a great blow for Azarenka (the only world no.1 not to receive he recognition). Vika has been the most consistent player on tour, but when Serena was there she was the one. The American had also a telling 5-0 record against the Belarus in 2012 to justify even more her well deserved award (the third of her career).

Serena’s highlights of the season has been winning Wimbledon, the US Open, the Olympics and the WTA Final in Istanbul

“It means a lot to be named ITF world champion for the third time. It has been such an amazing experience this year to win the Olympics and two Grand Slam tournaments, and I look forward to having an awesome 2013,” she said
