Novak Djokovic jeopardized Roger Federer’s chance of winning his 7th Australian Open title. The Swiss fall to a resounding defeat of 7-6(1), 6-4, 4-3 to the Serbian. Besides the loss, it was a tough outing for the 38-year-old. He struggled to see out the semi-final encounter against Djokovic due to a persistent groin injury. Despite putting up a spirited fight in the first set, it just became hard for him to outclass the 32-year-old. As a result, he was eliminated from the tournament at Rod Laver Arena.

For Novak Djokovic, he will play against Dominic Them in the Australian Open final. Both players understand what it is at stake for them. The Serbian hopes to reclaim the number one position that he lost to Rafael Nadal towards the end of last year. Furthermore, he is in the hunt for his 8th Australian Open title that will add up to 17 Grand slam titles won, to close in on Roger Federer who has 20. On the other side, a victory for Dominic Them means he wins not only a grand slam for the first time but also rises to No. 3 in the ATP rankings. Federer feels he still got it to win another Grand Slam
Despite crashing out of the Australian Open, Federer is still confident that he can win another Grand Slam title. According to the post-match interview after suffering a defeat against Djokovic, the Swiss stated that he could win 1 or 2 more slams. Already, he has won 20 major honors in his tennis career, leading the likes of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. But with retirement beckoning him, there is a possibility his worthy competitors might overtake him in terms of most grand slams won.
Both Nadal and Djokovic are tipped to break his current number of grand slam titles. Besides, there is also the threat of the next-generation tennis players who feel ready to overthrow the old regime. The likes of Dominic Them, Alexander Zverev, Stefano’s Tsitsipas, Nick Kyrgios, among many more have so far established themselves as future Grand slam winners. Their development has already caught the attention of Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer. The three are convinced that sooner or later, there will be a totally new Grand slam winner.
