Sascha Zverev is about to play his first slam final at the Australian Open against his dear friend Dominic Thiem. However, that happened after a rather disastrous start of the season as the German lost all his matches during a below-par ATP Cup. the 22-year-old was in a very bad place in Brisbane as he appeared completely lacking of confidence committing also an incredible series of double faults. Sascha had a rather spectacular meltdown during his match against Stefanos Tsitsipas to redirect his anger at his father that was reduced in tears.
Fortunately, after the ATP Cup, things started to get much better for Sascha. The German reached the final 4 in style in Melbourne and when asked by John McEnroe some comments about his father being his own coach, Sascha ironically answered: “[It’s] great is like a normal coach that doesn’t like his player too much, to be honest. We spend a lot of hours on the court. We spend a lot of hours on-site and then I do not see him until the next day. This is how usually works.”
The Sascha became more “serious” in his comments to say: “It has been great. There are a lot of opinions that I should get a new coach and that I should change it up, but every time that I am working alone with my dad, we prove that we can win big terms and that we can go to the further stages of big tournaments. He has made me the tennis player that I am.
In my opinion, for me there is absolutely no reason to change. If he tells me that he is tired, I will understand as well and we will get some help, but he will be part of my team I think for a very long time.”
