    Garbine’s family and bio

    Garbine was born in Caracas, Venezuela on 8th October 1993. Her mother, Scarlet Blanco is from Venezuela, while her father, Jose Antonio Muguruza is from Spain. She is the youngest in her family and has two brothers, Igor, an economist and Asier, an engineer. Garbine began playing tennis when she was three years old. The 26-year-old turned pro in 2012. She is 1.82 meters tall and plays right-handed.

    Career success and accomplishments

    After turning pro in 2012, Garbine made a name for herself in the 2014 season after she defeated two high-profile opponents. At the Australian Open, the world No. 32 defeated Caroline Wozniacki on her way to a round of 16 appearances. Later that year, she beat Serena Williams at the French Open. The Spaniard was dominant in her victory over the American, defeating her in straight sets in their second-round match. In 2015, the two would meet again in the Wimbledon final, but Serena won the match.

    Muguruza won her first Grand Slam title in 2016. Her rivalry with Serena continued as they played each other again at the French Open. She had her revenge over the American, winning the match in straight sets to lift her first Grand Slam title. The former world No. 1 won her second major title in 2017. This time, she played Venus Williams in the final at Wimbledon, defeating her in straight sets. Garbine’s performances that year catapulted her to her first number one ranking of her career. In addition to her two Grand Slam titles, the Spaniard has won five WTA singles titles.

    The 2016 French Open winner keeps out of the limelight and not much is known about her personal life private. Garbine currently doesn’t have a boyfriend. In 2018, rumors circulated that she was a lesbian. This was after she trained with a former tennis player, Conchita Martinez. While Muguruza has neither confirmed nor denied the rumors, she did react angrily to Margret Court’s comments in 2017 that tennis was full of lesbians.
