Stosur awarded with the Newcombe Medal

It wasn’t the finest year for Sam, but she has still achieved something important as she ended up in the top 10 of  WTA rankings for the 3rd consecutive year.

Still a good tennis ambassador for Australian tennis, the world no.9 commented

“Receiving the Newcombe Medal for a third year in a row is an amazing honour,” said Stosur,

”The Newcombe Medal is a great occasion for the Australian tennis community to come together and celebrate our sport, recognise people’s achievements and contributions to Australian tennis. I think it’s great that the tennis community continues to recognise the hard work of its members who make the growth of our sport possible for the longevity of tennis in our country.”

The other finalists were Matosevic, Hewitt and Dellacqua.

John Eagle won the Coach Excellence – High Performance because he managed to help Matosevic to break into the top50 (from being outside the 200 ranking).

Luke Saville was awarded the best junior athlete of the year for males and 16-year-old Ashleigh Barty won the award for the 3rd consecutive year for females as she managed to rise more than 600 places to world no.176.

Tomic didn’t receive any nomination.
