Coco Gauff's mother Candi

Coco Gauff’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, maintains that her success is due also because of her fantastic parents: her mother Candi and father Corey.

Coco’s standing continues to grow following her recent exploits at the Australian Open. The 15-year-old played Venus Williams in the opening round of the tournament. The two had played each other at Wimbledon, a match which Coco won to capture the attention of the tennis world. She was also victorious in Australia, advancing to the second round where she defeated Sorana Cirstea. Her next match was against Naomi Osaka, and many analysts picked the Japanese star to progress to the fourth round.

Coco pulled off the upset and defeated the Australian defending champion. The American teenager won the match 6-3 6-4 in a dominant display. Osaka seemed rattled by the 15-year-old as she made several unforced errors during the match. It was sweet revenge for Gauff after Osaka had defeated her in the third round of the US Open last year. It only took 67 minutes for the teenager to record her first victory over the former world number one.

Candi’s influence on Coco’s career

Watching from the stands were Coco’s parents, Candi and Corey. The couple has been one of the reasons for their daughter’s successful career so far. The two are former athletes, with Corey playing basketball in college while Candi was a track athlete. Corey coaches his daughter during matches, but his wife also plays an important role in their daughter’s life. She instills the competitive spirit often seen when Coco is on the court.

As a former track and field athlete at Florida State University, Candi knows what it takes to be competitive in any sport. In a past interview, she revealed that she was interested in pursuing gymnastics during her time in college. “Track and field was a second love. Gymnastics was my first. But no matter what I was going to do, I was going to try and do my best in it, because I just like to compete.”

Candi has been seen celebrating wildly when her daughter is on the court. Fans have praised her for her passion during teenager’s matches. She has said that she meditates and prays when her daughter is on the court. Coco also has two younger brothers. Candi was a teacher before she left her job to focus on supporting her daughter’s career. The current world No. 67 will face Sofia Kenin in the fourth round on Sunday. After her latest victory, the 15-year-old will be a dark horse to win her first Grand Slam title.
