MELBOURNE RESULTS. Riske bests Wang in the 1st round of the Australian Open

Alison Riske aces Yafan Wang 7-6⁵ 2-6 6-3 in the 1^st round in Melbourne on Tuesday. Riske will try to go further in the tournament when he will face Lin Zhu in the 2^nd round.

1^st set.

Alison won the set after she broke the Chinese in the 5^th (3-2) and in the 11^th (6-5) game. The Chinese tried to stage a comeback breaking in the 10^th (5-5) and in the 12^th (6-6) game. Notwithstanding, the American maintained the focus before winning the set at the following tiebreak at 5.

The American failed to serve out the set when leading 6-5 to be broken at 30.

2^nd set.

Wang didn’t want to give any chance to the opposition at the beginning of the set after breaking Riske in the 1^st game (1-0). Anyhow, that wasn’t sufficient for the Chinese to win the set because Alison succeeded in breaking back in the 2^nd (1-1) game. The Chinese maintained her focus to break the American in the 3^rd (2-1) and in the 5^th (4-1) game before winning the set (6-2).

Certainly, a key moment was when Yafan won 4 consecutive games in the 2^nd set to change the scoreline from 1-1 to 5-1.

3^rd set.

Riske had a racing start in this set after breaking Wang in the 2^nd game (2-0). However, that wasn’t sufficient for Alison to win the set because the Chinese managed to break back in the 3^rd (1-2) and in the 7^th (3-4) game. Alison kept her focus to break Wang in the 6^th (4-2) and in the 8^th (5-3) game before winning the set (6-3).

At the end of the match, Alison scored 113 points vs. the Chinese’s 111 points.

The American didn’t lose the focus when converting 50% of the break points that she conquered (6/12). On the other side, Wang was pretty effective in converting 54% of the break points that she conquered points (7/13). Anyhow, that was not enough to win the match.
