Serena Williams’s endeavors in the sport of tennis have earned her fame and fortune in her career. The 38-year-old has had a profound impact on the game, with her dominance of the game, as well as her advocacy for equal pay for women. The former world number one recently won her first singles title since she returned to the game after a maternity absence.
Serena wins the first title since 2017
The 23-time Grand Slam champion took a break from the game in early 2017, to focus on her family life. She was pregnant with her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian at the time. Serena delivered her daughter in September that year. After the successful delivery, Serena returned to the game in late 2018 and reached the US Open final that year. However, after her return to the game, she endured an unlucky run of form. She would reach the finals of different tournaments but fall short of lifting the title. Her luck finally changed this month after she won the Auckland Open, her first title since she had her daughter.
I’m just Olympia’s mom
Serena is currently competing at the Australian Open. After winning her first match against Anna Potapova, she revealed that her daughter was yet to understand her huge popularity. She said that her daughter is currently more interested in playing with her dolls and she is yet to understand what her mother does for a living. Serena says she is happy her daughter only recognizes her as her mother. “I’m just known around town as Olympia’s mom, to all of her friends. I just love that, absolutely love that.” Olympia is now two years old. Last September, on her two-year birthday, Serena posted a lovely message on her Instagram, calling her the greatest accomplishment of her life. However, she has said that she will not throw many birthday parties for her since her religion does not encourage it.
With the Australian Open starting this week, Serena will be in the hunt for her 24th Grand Slam title. A victory at the tournament will tie Margret Courts’ all-time record. She has already set the record for most matches won in the Open era by a female player with 350 victories. She started her Australian Open campaign in dominant fashion, defeating Russian Anastasia Potapova 6-0 6-3. She will face Tamara Zidansek in the second round. Serena has also commented on the air quality situation at the tournament, saying she was monitoring the quality on a daily basis.
