Coco Gauff had a breakout season last year. The young American caught the world’s attention with her performance at Wimbledon. She eliminated experienced players such as Venus Williams as she progressed to the last 16 of the tournament. She also won the Linz Open in Austria, becoming one of the youngest players to win a WTA title. Now with the new season underway, Coco took the time to celebrate her biggest fans.
Who are Coco’s mother Candi and father Corey
Candi and Corey Gauff recently celebrated their anniversary. The two have been instrumental to Coco’s career. They are former college athletes. Her father, Corey, played basketball at Georgia State University. Her mother, Candi, was a track and field star at Florida State University. The two have supported their daughter’s tennis career and even moved to Florida to ensure that she could get the best training possible. Her father often coaches her on the sidelines during matches. In addition to her father’s coaching, Coco also trains at Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy.

Coco’s chances at the Australian Open
Coco played at the Auckland Open this month. She reached the round of 16 but lost out to Laura Siegemund 7-5 2-6 3-6. During their match, the American had a moment with her dad after he cursed into the microphone during a coaching break. She laughed and corrected her dad who later apologized for the incident. Currently ranked 66th in the world, Coco will be eligible for the main draw at the Australian Open. She will hope to replicate her deep run at Wimbledon. Her performance at the US Open was underwhelming after Naomi Osaka defeated her in the third round.
While Gauff may not be a favorite to win the tournament, she will still be a threat to any opponent she faces. She has traveled to Australia to prepare for the tournament which kicks off on 20th January. The 15-year-old has also pledged to make a donation towards relief efforts following the wildfires in Australia. Making the announcement on Twitter, she pledged to donate $200 for every ace she hit during the Auckland tournament. She said that she had hit around 15 aces during the tournament. Other superstars have also pledged to support the wildfire relief efforts. Serena Williams, with whom she shares a coach, donated her $43,000 dollar prize money after winning the Auckland Open. She will participate in a charity match this Wednesday aimed at raising money for the relief efforts. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will also play at the event.

Currently ranked no.66 (career-high), Gauff played her last match on the 9th of January when she had to bow to Laura Siegemund 5-7 6-2 6-3 in the 2nd round in Auckland.
