Karolina Plsikova and Serena Williams enjoy a rather interesting rivalry. The Czech is one of the few players in history to have not a negative record against the American legend (2-).

Last week, both won a WTA event. While Karolina triumphed in Brisbane, Serena won the ASB Classic in Auckland. During a press conference following her title in Australian, Karolina was asked to comment on Serena. She said:

“I think she had a couple chances already last two years. She was always quite close. I think this time, especially there was, I think, no really opponent which would have the game to beat her.

And I think for sure she did some work in the off-season, too, so she’s quite strong and she looks quite pumped, she was playing doubles too.

I think she’s going to be always tough no matter which ranking she is, no matter which age she is. So she’s going to be always tough. And of course our match I think everybody will remember forever, especially me, maybe also she (laughing.) And, yeah, always looking forward to play her, so no matter if she’s going to be in my part of the draw, it’s going to be a challenge.

Interesting comment. However, looking forward to a rematch between the two, and it will be a good one. I favor Serena will remember their last meeting and how she lost.

I’m glad she said that. Serena will need all the motivation she can get. Pliskova won her last match against Serena after Serena rolled her ankle and her movement was compromised. Pliskova has never won a grand slam and I don’t think she has earned the right to criticize a player of Serena’s caliber. She should humble herself and focus on at least getting into another grand slam final, which she has not been in a GS final since the 2016 US Open. Serena has been in four grand slam finals since her return from pregnancy in 2018.
