Roger is the first to qualify for the semifinals, but there are some holes in his game that he has to revise.
Federer – Ferrer 6-4 7-6 (5)
Strange match, very strange. On one side Federer looked lethargic from the very beginning, on the other Ferrer had to fight against a complex of inferiority (he lost 13 times against the Maestro) and the fact that he was a bit tired.
The big difference was that Federer doesn’t struggle at all with Ferrer game for 3 reasons: first Ferrer doesn’t have a big serve (and Federer often struggle with his return), second Ferrer doesn’t hammer Roger’s backhand (as Djokovic, Murray and Nadal do), third Ferrer’s huge inferiority complex with the Swiss makes Roger somewhat comfortable.
The Match
An imperfect Roger was immediately 0-40 down in the opening game to bounce back, hold serve and then break Ferrer. Roger was curiously 3-0 up playing a below the average tennis. Till that point Roger had horrendous serve statistics as he already conceded a bunch of break points and his percentage of 1st serve in was below 35%. Eventually after losing the serve and breaking David again Federer won the opening set 6-4.
The second set was a bit better with Federer improving his service and defeating Ferrer at the tiebreak.
The match ended with Federer conceding 10 break points on 11 service game (8 on 5 service game in the first set), something to have a look at.

“This is a very special tournament in many ways,” said Federer, “It’s always been the tournament I wanted to be part of when I started playing at the beginning of the year, many years now. I had breakthrough results at this event. I learned a lot. I’ve loved everywhere I’ve played over the years at the World Tour Finals. But I think this one is obviously special, because it’s in London and The O2 is an amazing venue. I’m happy it’s going to stay here for the next few years.”
Del Potro – Tipsarevic 6-0 6-4
Easy life for Delpo that trashes Tipsarevic 6-0 6-4 in 76 minutes.
“I’m glad to beat Janko tonight,” said del Potro. “I play much better than my first match here . A win in two sets gives me a chance to go to the next (semifinals). I know if I want to beat Roger, I should play much better than today and my first match.”
