Kyrgios wins match after saving MP with a second serve ace

Nick Kyrgios keeps on hitting the headlines for “weird things.”

In Cincinnati, the Australian did something unusual when he saved a match point after almost 2 hours of play with an ace on the second serve.

What happened

In the first round, Nick was opposed to Denis Kudla. After exchanging the first 2 sets, the Australian was facing a match point in the tiebreak of the decider (7-8) when he failed to put in the first serve.  Soon after, the Australian blasted a 133mph ace on the second set before winning the match 6-7 (2) 7-5 7-6 (9).

It’s normal for me. KYRGIOS

After the match, The Australian commented

“I don’t feel as if I can miss that serve again, so I just go for it. It came off today, but obviously some days it’s not going to work. But on days like today, obviously, it got me the win.

I have won a lot of matches doing that… It’s high percentage for me. My serve is my best shot. It’s high percentage to back myself and go for those serves under pressure. Sometimes you’re going to lose, and most of the time, if you back yourself, you win the match.”

Next vs. Coric

Nick will face Coric in the 2nd round. The head to head is 1-1 after Borna defeated Nick also in the 2nd round of Cincinnati 2 years ago.
