Federer secures the world no2 spot. He can be back to world no1 in January

A very exciting 2012 is about to finish and we are already looking forward to a wonderful 2013 (what else?;-).

2012 Rankings

Nothing to discuss about it. The top positions by the end of the year will be as follows:

1- Djokovic
2- Federer
3- Murray

2013 Race for no.1

Djokovic’s early defeat in Paris can open a very interesting situation in 2013 between the Serb and the Swiss for the world no.1 spot.

Things will become very interesting if Roger wins the World Tour Finals for the 7th time.  Let’s say that he wins losing a match and Nole reaches the final (not an impossible scenario). Roger would end 2012 with 10765pts (9456+1300) and Nole with 12410pts (11410+1000).

Australian Open…

Let’s not count any other minor tournament before the first slam that would award not many poits (eg Doha).
Getting to the 2013 AO, Nole will “lose” 2000pts (as he won the AO in 2012) and Roger will “lose” 720pts (he lost in the semis with Rafa), this means that there will be only 365pts between the two.  If Federer outperforms Djokovic at the Australian Open he should be world no.1 once again.
Winner – 2000pts
Runner up – 1200pts
Semifinal – 720pts
Quarterfinal – 360pts

…but then…

If that ever happens, then Roger will struggle to keep the top spot since he has to defend many points in February as he won Rotterdam (500pts) and Dubai (500pts) in 2012 and Indian Wells in March (1000pts)…
Then it would be Nole’s time to defend many points from Miami (1000pts) and the finals in Rome (600pts), Montecarlo (600pts) and the Roland Garros (1200pts).

It is difficult to predict every scenario, the only certainty is that it is going to be fun.. once again!
