The new season is about to commence, and the top players have the opportunity to compete for a fantastic prize money at the upcoming Australian Open.

The Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley disclosed that the prize money has been increased to $71 million. Therefore the champions in singles (men and women) will get a rather interesting check of $4.1 million each hat is a 13.6% increase. Even more interesting, there will be a double-digit percent increase for every round.

There was a significant increase also for the players that will lose in the very first rounds of the competition so as to make the trip to Australian more “affordable.” Therefore, the players that lose in the first round of the qualifications will get $20,000, up 33%. Even better, the players that will be defeated in the first round of the slam will get $90,000 in prize money.

Tiley commented: “We have long been committed to improving the pay and conditions for a deeper pool of international tennis players.

In fact, since AO 2007, prize-money has more than tripled from $20 million to the $71 million for 2020, we are announcing today. This year, as we do every year, we worked with the tours to establish the weighting for prizemoney increases round-by-round, and we pushed to reward players competing early in the tournament in both singles and doubles.

“We strongly believe in growing prize money at all levels of the game, and we will continue to work with the playing group to create viable career paths in the sport and enable more players to make more money.”
