We had a strange and wonderful 2012 in the WTA circuit.
Azarenka finished as world no.1, Maria Sharapova is back to business, Agnieszka Radwanska delighted us with her “magic” tennis and Serena Williams was a “trashing machine”!
The Match
Once again Serena was too much. With an incredible power tennis and a huge self confidence Serena destroys Maria Sharapova with a comfortable 6-4 6-3. The American broke Maria’s service already in the 5th game of the first set to then cruise in the second.
The difference between the two was clear in both winners and consistency. On top of it Serena was continuously able to attack Sharapova on her second serve to put huge pressure on the Russian. Too much to handle! The match ends in straight sets and Maria didn’t even manage to reach a break point.

“Now that I can be honest, I really wanted to win,” Williams said. “I wanted it so bad but I didn’t want to say it … It was really important for me to end the year with this title in particular.”
“If I’m playing well and doing everything right, It’s pretty difficult to beat me, without trying to sound too full of myself,” Williams said. “And I hate to lose.”
The “real” world no.1 ?
The strongest player in 2012 was definitely Azarenka (consistency and fitness) . But after Serena recovered from her multiple injuries she was just too much for everybody.
The turning point was after Serena’s shocking defeat in the first round at the Roland Garros , then game over for the rest of the pack. Serena recorder a 31-1 record for the rest of the year winning Wimbledon, the Olympics,the US Open and the WTA Championship. And she did it in style by literally trashing everybody.
The WTA Championship wasn’t any different with Serena winning every match in straight sets something not easy when you play Kerber, Li Na, Radwanska, Azarenka and Sharapova!
Now Serena is ranked as world no.3… but… the 2013 is going to be about the American… good luck to the others!
