Serena Williams and her battle to defend women from financial abuse

Domestic abuse has grown to become a serious issue in not only the United States but also other parts of the world. Most of those cases have involved a woman being assaulted or beaten by their former or current partner.

Financial abuse has been part and parcel of the most common forms of domestic abuse. Several women have to bear living without the right to control money in their homes. Under financial abuse, one partner is limited in terms of daily expenditure and accessing personal and joint accounts. These limitations put the abused partner unemployed and unable to maximize their credit cards. Unfortunately, most women are in such abusive relationships due to the fact they are not yet in a position to support themselves.

The fight against financial abuse

However, the fight against domestic abuse is hitting up as time goes by. Women are becoming enlightened regarding this vice; hence they can now stand up for their rights. Women initiatives are at the forefront to put this matter of financial abuse to rest once and for good. This is why back in October while marking the National Domestic  Violence Month, the Allstate Foundation worked closely with Serena Williams to give insight to women regarding financial abuse.

The campaign created space for meaningful conversations on how best to tackle financial abuse. Equipping women with knowledge on this issue means they can quickly identify the possibilities of financial abuse and hence take the necessary precautions with immediate effect.

Serena Williams on financial abuse

Serena Williams highlighted some of the restrictions that come with this form of domestic abuse. She said, “Not being able to use your credit cards, having to show receipts for every dime that you spend, having freedom of choice taken away from you. Those are all signs.”

She welcomed this partnership with the Allstate Foundation as an avenue to be the voice of reason for women who are facing financial abuse in their relationships. Williams swore to enlighten women about some of the barriers they might come along while trying to run from this form of abuse. Besides, she promised to teach her daughter, Olympia, all about financial abuse and domestic abuse as a whole.

The Allstate Foundation, on its part, provides guidelines on how victims can acquire financial independence. Furthermore, it offers a list of vital documents, advice on how to get protection orders, and money-saving tips.
