Del Potro upsets Federer – 2012 Basel – Youtube

It’s Delpo time!

The Argentine conquers 2 back to back tournaments. After his triumph in Vienna last week, it was time to win in Basel.

The Match

There was something not 100% right from both players. Delpo was understandably cautious about his movements, definitely slow, but in control. Roger looked upset and a bit grumpy from the very beginning.

The Swiss was incredibly slow and it seems that he was protecting something (an injury?) to try not to stretch too much on the baseline. He looked stiff and during the match in between points he was doing some strange movements with his back/shoulders in a clear discomfort.

Roger tried to use the correct strategy with a tired Del Potro (alias move him around), but he wasn’t sharp in some important moments to never manage to break Juan Martin.

The match ended after 2 hours and 45 minutes. This was Juan Martin 4th title of the season (the 13th of his career).

From Delpo

“It was an unbelievable final, the match was really close,” said del Potro. “After six losses, it was a big win for me. I was fighting all the time. I got lucky in the end, but I felt that I played a really good match.

“I was focused on my defensive game, keeping the ball in play and building my confidence in order to break his serve. It was tough for both of us. I was to enjoy this title, then get ready to play in Paris and London.” added Juan Martin.

From Roger

“I thought overall I played pretty good,” said Federer. “He got off to a bit of a better start, but it was close. He served well at the beginning, which made him the better player in the first set. The second set was close. He didn’t play a very good tie-break and then I had my chances early on in the third. I couldn’t break, despite doing the right things, but then I didn’t play a good tie-break myself.

“He has been playing really well this season. I have played him seven times. Every time, I can see he is extremely tough. He has been making the right improvements throughout the year. He is, basically, right there again.”
