Federer, Nadal, Murray and Medvedev’s coach win prestigious ATP Awards

The ATP awards are assigned after a thrilling season

Federer Nadal Murray

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Daniil Medvedev’s coach win 4 prestigious ATP Awards after a rather interesting season.

Federer was voted by the fans for the 17th consecutive year as the ATP Fans’ Favourite of the year. This award was highly anticipated as the Swiss is one of the most loved athletes (not only tennis players) in history. Testimony of Roger’s popularity was his recent record in Mexico when he attracted 42,517 adoring fans. Federer and Nadal will break this record this coming February when they are expected to have more than 57,000 fans at their exhibition match in Cape Town.

Rafael Nadal

A few weeks ago, Rafael Nadal, or whoever was managing his Twitter account, asked to win the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award. Stefanos Tsitsipas made fun of him saying “I feel like it’s going to be @rogerfederer for the 68th time in a row.”

Eventually, Rafa made it for the 3rd time in his career after 2010 and 2018. That was a very well-deserved award given Rafa’s tremendous behavior on and off the court.

Andy Murray and his spectacular comeback

The Brit was voted by the other tennis players for the 2019 Comeback Player Of The Year. This didn’t come as a surprise. Many thought that the Brit called it a career in January after he got emotional during an interview in Australia. Everyone was a bit too keen in congratulating Andy for his great career. However, the former world no.1 had other plans. After his hip surgery, he went back to competitions in doubles before winning an incredible title in Antwerp in singles. Yes… everything happened in the same year.

Daniil Medvedev’s coach

Daniil’s coach Gilles Cervara was voted by his peers as the 2019 Coach Of The Year. The Frenchman has been instrumental in helping Medvedev to reach 6 consecutive finals and win 2 Masters ATP1000. Daniil and Gilles have a special relationship, and for obscure reasons, sometimes the Russian get mad rather openly against his coach when he succumbs to frustration during his matches. In these moments, Cervara is great to keep the composure, and Daniil is always ready to apologize soon after.

Among the other awards, Italian sensation Jannikl Sinner was named the Newcomer of the year after he won 3 Challengers and the Next Gen Finals. The Bryans won the Fans’ Favourite Award In 2019 (doubles) for the 14th time (together). Kevin Anderson won the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award as he dedicated himself to various charitable activities in the US.  Matteo Berrettini won the award as the Most Improved player after he surprised everyone after his US Open run (semifinal) and for qualifying for the ATP Finals.
