EXPLAINED. Why Bianca Andreescu conquered the WTA Newcomer of the Year Award

Bianca Andreescu won the WTA Newcomer of the Year Award after a truly remarkable season. The award goes to the player that broke in the top100 to achieve notable accomplishments for the first time during the season.

Bianca’s ascent was tremendous to gain 173 ranking spots from her year-end ranking in 2018 (No.178) to finish the year no.5. Furthermore, Andreescu clinched 3 titles in 2019, including her first Slam at the US Open in her tournament main draw debut to become the first Canadian player to win a major in singles.

The Canadian also impressed at the very beginning of the year after she commenced the season with her career first Tour-level final at the ASB Classic in Auckland after beating on the way top players such as Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki.

In addition, after claiming her first top10 scalps, she ended the year with an 8-3 win-loss record against Top10 players. After all this feat, Bianca also managed to qualify for the WTA Finals in Shenzhen.

This is “just” another recognition for Bianca that was also the first tennis player to receive the prestigious Lou Marsh Award.

This year Andreescu has a 46-7 win-loss record. Andreescu conquered 4 titles in 2019 in the Newport Beach, in Indian Wells, in Toronto and at the U.S. Open. Andreescu was the finalist in Auckland.
