Murray’s injury woes
He underwent a significant surgery at the beginning of the year which turned out to be positive. The 32-year-old has since made a return to playing tennis winning his maiden ATP Singles in Antwerp in October.
The British might just be one of the surprise winners of the Australian Open come next year. However, the betting odds do not favor him at all, but that does not rule him out from pulling off a masterclass performance. At the moment, Bet365 has assigned him an odd of 26.00 to be an outright winner of the Australian Open. Novak Djokovic is the clear favorite with 2.75 betting odds, followed by Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev who have 4.50,11.00, and 11.00 respectively.
A tough task awaits Andy Murray
But Murray is hopeful he can put up a show. His first target is to ensure that he can successfully play the best-of-five tennis match to completion.
“I haven’t played a best-of-five-match since I had the operation. A good result would be that I can play a best of five match and have no ill effects from that with my hip,” he told talkSPORT before the launch of a new Amazon documentary, that highlights his amazing return from a hip injury.
However, winning the Australian Open will not be a walk in the park for Murray. First, he will not be seeded, this is because he is currently ranked at position 126 in the ATP world rankings. Therefore, he is likely to face his biggest tennis foes such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic in his opening matches.
Secondly, while the Scot was out sidelined with an injury, new aggressive and talented young tennis players graced the 2019 season. The likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev are among the youngsters committed to getting rid of the old guard in tennis. These are likely opponents that Murray will have to be wary of going into the 2020 Australian Open. In fact, he has not played or trained with them, so it might be a tough encounter facing off with anyone of them.
