Andre Petkovic is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished female tennis players from Germany. In the last 15 years, she has won a significant number of titles and her performance has been very enticing. She has got also many interesting opinions and she has recently expressed about Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka.

Who is Andrea Petkovic?

Petkovic was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina but later relocated with her parents to Germany while she was only 6 months. While in Germany, she developed love for tennis with her father Zoran who was a tennis teacher offering her significant help. The 32-year-old went on to clinch WTA tour titles and in 2011 she was ranked as world number 9. In 2017 she made it to the French Open semifinals. To date, Petkovic has collected at least 7 million euros as prize money.

Currently, she lives in Darmstadt where she has found a passion for writing. She is a magazine writer, besides her book is set to be released next year. The 32-year-old is also hoping to start writing in English in the future. When asked about writing in English while on SDZ sport, this is what she said, “This is my dream. My current favorite writer, George Saunders, has a creative writing course in Syracuse, New York. I hope that I can visit the course someday-after the tennis career.”

On women empowerment in sports

Andre Petkovic believes that women have not been given more attention when it comes to sports. She is convinced that time has come when women also need to be placed on the same footing as men when it comes to sports. This is why while on SDZ sport she applauded some of the women she believes are bold enough such as Megan Rapinoe, Venus Williams and Serena Williams.

The German also thinks its high time to include more women in the Laver Cup. In an interview at SDZ sport, she said, “It would be great if you nominated more women per team in the Laver Cup. And maybe an extra woman as a coach.”

If her proposed changes were to be implemented, Petkovic is certain it will be a great strategy for marketing the tournament. Besides, it might also equalize teams in regards to playing ability.

On who should play, she said, “However, Serena Williams from the US and Naomi Osaka from Japan could join Team World. And this format would also send an important socio-political message.”

It is now up to Roger Federer to decide whether her proposals are appealing to him or not. Already a meeting between her and two Laver Cup investors has been scheduled to chat the way forward.
