Why Federer didn’t watch the Davis Cup

The world No.3 had a more cautious statement regarding the Davis Cup reforms this time.

Why Federer didn't watch the Davis Cup

As one of the world’s top tennis players, Roger Federer was a major fixture in the Davis Cup for a time. For example, the Swiss Maestro had a huge role in Switzerland’s win in the team tournament in 2014, representing the country’s first victory. But Federer has also been noticeably absent from the tournament since 2015. As he is MIA in the Davis Cup again this year, he raised more eyebrows this week when he said that he will not be watching the tournament.

Roger Federer had no time to watch the Davis Cup

The Swiss acknowledged the big role the Davis Cup had on his career. According to La Tercera, he described that the Davis Cup matches he played when he was younger gave him a lot of things to learn that helped him as a tennis star. He also admitted that he will not be able to watch any of the Davis Cup games because he is busy.

Federer’s criticisms of the Davis Cup revamp

The world No.3 had a more cautious statement regarding the Davis Cup reforms this time. According to him, he wanted to wait and see how the new changes will affect the tournament. He also said that he was also looking forward to how the Davis Cup will differentiate itself from the ATP Cup in January.

Federer was brutally honest when news of the reforms first spread. There have been a few shots thrown between the Swiss and football star Gerard Pique, who owns the company that is leading the Davis Cup revamps. He said that he found Pique’s sudden interest in tennis suspicious, even going as far as warning the organizers to not let the tournament become the “Pique Cup.”

He also criticized the decision to hold the Davis Cup right after the ATP Finals. Because of the revamped Davis Cup this year, the latter part of the tennis calendar has become so jam-packed, which can be a challenge for players.

Coincidentally, the 20-time Grand Slam champion is in Latin America for a series of exhibition games. He played the exhibition games with German star Alexander Zverev in Mexico City, Santiago, Bogota, and Buenos Aires. The games happened at the same time as the first part of the Davis Cup.

Pique reacts to criticism

Meanwhile, Pique took all the criticism in stride as he wanted to concentrate on what he calls as his “life’s work.” He, however, dismissed the lack of enthusiasm from Federer.

He pointed out that it is possible that Roger is threatened by the Davis Cup. Federer’s company organizes the Laver Cup annually, which pits Team Europe and Team World against each other. Pique also thinks that competition is also the reason why Australia criticized the changes in the Davis Cup because it is prepping to host the ATP Cup.
