Kyrgios strongly disagrees with Djokovic about team competitions (Davis Cup, Laver Cup, ATP Cup)

Kyrgios is still convinced that the four grand slams define what tennis is all about.

Novak Djokovic does not fancy the idea of having many team tournaments. This is why he even wants the ATP and Davis Cups merged to form one elite tournament. The Serbian, who is ATP’s Player Council president, loves playing the Davis Cup having also won it together with his teammates in 2010.

“But then, of course, scheduling was always an issue, for both ATP Cup and Davis Cup. In my opinion, which was my idea that it could happen, was a merger between the two. And so, I think it’s still open for the future,” he said.

The 32-year-old is currently in Madrid where he is part of the Serbian team competing in the ongoing Davis Cup. In their Group A match, he led Serbia to a 3-0 win against Japan at the La Caja Magica.

Nick Kyrgios supports the need for more team tournaments

Nick Kyrgios does not share the same sentiment as the Serbian. He believes that the ATP Cup, Laver Cup, and Davis Cup are crucial to the tennis calendar. Besides, he regards these many team tournaments as necessary, since they allow him to spend more time with his Australian teammate.

The world No.30 fancies watching NBA is even calling on ITF and ATP to create more team events. He thinks in so doing; the relevant bodies will be enhancing the tennis sport and making it more popular.

“I just think moving forward that is the way the sport has to go. That is why the ATP and the ITF are trying to create more events because if they continue to go down the path, they are right now the sport will die out.

Kyrgios loves team events like the Laver Cup and Davis Cup

Kyrgios is still convinced that the four grand slams define what tennis is all about. Nevertheless, he argues that for tennis to become more popular, then organizing more events will help a lot. “There has to be more events like the Laver Cup where there is 17,000 watching, and there are more viewers than during a grand slam,” he added.

The ATP Cup is slated for January, only six weeks after the conclusion of the Davis Cup and will precede the Australian Cup. That team tournament will attract 24 nations which will be played in three Australian cities.
