A fantastic season has just ended, and it’s time for the ritual awards. Bianca Andreescu, Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep, and Karolina Pliskova were named for the WTA Player of the Year award after their fantastic season. The WTA Player Awards will be awarded in December.

Bianca Andreescu

Bianca Andreescu had a sensational 2019 that culminated with her incredible US Open title after defeating the great Serena Williams in the final. The Canadian sensation started the season, appearing almost from nowhere after reaching the final in Auckland, coming straight from the qualifications. On that occasion, Bianca impressed not only for her run, but also for the fact that she defeated Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki on the way.

Later, Andreescu won a sensation title in Indian Wells before being sidelined for long by a shoulder injury. When back to competitions, Bianca won back to back the Rogers Cup and the US Open giving the impression that if she is healthy (or even with a small injury), she is almost unbeatable.

Bianca was also named for the Newcomer of the Year award and she ended the season ranked no.5 after reaching a world no.4 career high. In January she was ranked no.178.

Naomi Osaka

Naomi had an extremely complicated season. The Japanese sensation started in the best possible way with the Australian Open title and the consequent world no.1 rank. However, Osaka started to struggle after she abruptly parted ways with her coach and mentor, Sascha Bajin. The Japanese hired Jermaine Jenkins as her new coach, but that didn’t bring much. Eventually, Naomi found her way soon after she sacked Jermaine to win back to back the home tournament in Osaka and Beijing. Osaka ended the season ranked no.3.

Simona Halep

After an extremely taxing 2018, Simona Halep decided to have a much lighter 2019. However, this season turned to be quite successful as the Romanian legend won Wimbledon after playing a sensational final against Serena Williams.

Ashleigh Barty

When asked about his favorite player on the WTA tour, Andy Murray had no doubts: Ashleigh Barty. The Australian had an inspiring 2019 to win her first slam (the French Open) on a surface that wasn’t really the best for her: the red clay. Eventually, Ashleigh fell short during the grass-court season when she was meant to make a meal of the opposition, but she ended 2019 in the best possible way after she won the season’s finale in Shenzhen. Barty ended the year at the top of the rankings.

Karolina Pliskova

The Czech didn’t manage to win her first slam yet. However she has been rather consistent during the season to win 4 titles on all surfaces in Brisbane, Rome, Eastbourne, and Zhengzhou. Karolina ended the year as the world no.2
