Becker defends Zverev playing exhibitions with Federer instead of competing in the Davis Cup

Alexander Zverev’s decision not to participate in the upcoming Davis Cup but instead sign up for exhibition matches with Federer has been met with severe criticism. The German will not be part of the team that will go in hunt for the Davis Cup title in Spain.

Boris Becker came out to defend his countryman regarding his decision to turn down a chance of representing Germany. He said, “Look. He’s old enough to make his own decision. He decided amongst a few other players when the decision was made to change the Davis Cup format and have it one weak next year not to participate. He’s made the decision already a while ago amongst many other players. We accept it.”

Boris Becker showers Zverev with praises

The six-times Grand Slams Champion also appreciated Zverev for the number of times he represented Germany in such tournaments.

“On the other hand, he’s always played for Germany whenever I ask. He played in the first round against Hungary in Frankfurt the beginning of the year, and he did his bit, and he’s won his points. He was very excited to play at the ATP Cup, as well.

What he does in his off time, he’s his own man. We were all our own boss. What he chooses to do or not to do between the end of the ATP Finals and the beginning of 2020 is his choice,” he said.

What next for the German after the ATP Finals?

Alexander Zverev and Federer have signed up for some exhibition matches in Mexico and Chile. The Swiss withdrew from the Davis Cup citing family reasons but has been criticized for his decision to sign up for those exhibition matches.

The German will be playing Daniil Medvedev in his last Andre Agassi Group match in the ATP finals in London. In his first, game he beat Rafael Nadal 6-2,6-4. Unfortunately, he lost 6-3,.6-2 to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Winning his next match against the Russian will mean he qualifies for the semi-finals ahead of Rafael Nadal even if the Spaniard beats Tsitsipas. Already the German has admitted that he will be hoping to decide his fate in this season-ending showpiece.
