Why Serena Williams' coach Mouratoglou was happy with Tsitsipas beating Medvedev

Stefanos Tsitsipas has risen quickly in the ATP World rankings. Currently, he is ranked number six after having a fantastic season this year. The 21-year-old has reached the Australian Open semifinal before winning two titles in Estoril and Marseille.

In the ongoing ATP Finals in London, the Greek already booked his slot in the quarterfinal after defeating both Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev. In his first-round robin match, he beat the Russian 7-6(5) 6-4. This was the Greek debutant’s maiden win in the ATP Finals.

Speaking after the match, he did not hesitate to praise Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou. The Greek-French coach is currently working with Tsitsipas in London and seems his guidance is paying off.

“The best of the best. I do appreciate Patrick a lot. I do believe he’s a great coach. I don’t know if other people think the same for him, but I have worked with him quite a while, and the things that, the way that he sees tennis, the perspective and the imagination that he carries behind him, it’s really unique,” said Tsitsipas when he was asked about Patrick.

Patrick Mouratoglou could not hide his happiness following Tsitsipas first win in the ATP Finals. Serena Williams’ coach confirmed how important the win was to the youngster. According to The Tennis Channel, he said, “It’s always very important when you lose five times in a row to a player to find a way to have the first win although it’s difficult. He changed a lot of things mentally.

But in this tournament, the level is so high, and you have to stay focused because you have another one coming up. He is unbelievably proud and happy to be here, it’s a great achievement already to be among the top eight players in the world,”

Tsitsipas training with Mouratoglou’s coaching team

The French coach started working with Tsitsipas in 2014. He learned about the 21-year old’s talent and quickly notified his agent to come up with a way to assist the youngster. The Greek moved to Mouratoglou Academy where he started working with Patrick Mouratoglou. For years now, he has been training at that academy which is owned by Serena William’s current coach.

Stefanos’ father, Apostolos Tsitsipas and Patrick Mouratoglou have been working hand in hand to assist him.  In his second group match, he beat the current ATP Finals defending Champion, Alexander Zverev 6-3,6-2. The win means Tsitsipas is in the semifinals.
