ATP Rankings: It’s Federer no.300 (!) Djokovic is inches away to be world no.1

What a week! The wonderful Shanghai Masters helped the 2 top players to achieve their goals.

Federer

It’s official, the Swiss Maestro has been the world no.1 for a whopping 300 weeks. Roger needed to reach the quarters in Shanghai (and he did with a huge struggle against his friend Wawrinka ) to then lose in the semis against a super Murray.

A remarkable feat for Roger. “It’s a great reward for me,” says Federer . “I feel a great sense of satisfaction because of that incredible number and because of all the effort I’ve put into it. I know how much work it has been. It’s not easy to stay at the top for so long and handle all the obligations that go with just playing tennis.”

Roger may stay at the top of the rankings for 3 more weeks if he reaches the semis in Basel.

In fact, he is now 195pts ahead of Nole that is not going to play in Switzerland. Last year Roger won the tournament in Basel and Nole lost in the semis. This means that Roger will “lose” 500pts vs. Nole’s 180. So Roger will start from a 125pts deficit —>195pt (actual gap) – 500pts (Roger’s final) +180pts (Nole’s semis).

If Roger gets to the semis he will get 180pts that are enough to bridge the 125pts deficit.

Djokovic

Super Nole will definately be world no.1 at the end of the season unless he get injured. In fact, he is 2155 points ahead of roger in the Year to Date rankings. This means that if Roger wins in Basel he will be 2155-500=1655pts ahead. Too much for Roger to recover in just 2 tournaments.
