Below are some of the best highlights of 2019, according to the former tennis player.

Resilient Andreescu beating Serena Williams

Bianca Andreescu continued to make a name for herself when she defeated Serena Williams and clinched the US Open title. Barty’s meteoric rise to the top

It was a season to recall for Ashleigh Barty who not all ended the season at the top of WTA world Rankings but also won some titles. She exceeded her expectations of staying in the top 20, a target she set ahead of the just concluded 2019 season. The Australian won the French Open, WTA Finals in Shenzhen and finished the year as the WTA World No. 1. Her exceptional achievement came as a surprise both to her and tennis enthusiasts.

Gauff and Osaka displayed great sportsmanship

Osaka and Gauff touched many hearts with their magnificent display of sportsmanship. After Naomi Osaka beating Coco in the US Open’s that round, she did not hesitate to invite the American for an on-court interview. Osaka’s gesture was a positive sign for the kind of respect which every tennis player should accord their opponents.

Halep’s perfect performance against Serena Williams

Martina Navratilova described Halep’s performance against Williams in the Wimbledon final as close to perfect. The Romanian had a good game all through, playing like a machine. She seemed sure about what was required of her during the match hence beating Serena.

Unlucky Serena Williams

Serena Williams’ hunt for her 24th Grand Slam title only ended in a disappointment. She lost in all the two finals in the US Open and Wimbledon. However, the American still has a chance to make it 24 Grand Slam titles in 2020. Navratilova believes she will come back stronger.
