Djokovic won the set after he broke the Austrian in the 4th (3-1) game. Thiem tried to stage a comeback breaking in the 5th (3-2) game. Nevertheless, Novak maintained the focus before winning the set at the following tiebreak at 5.

Thiem started the set strong after breaking Djokovic in the 2nd game (2-0) before consolidating his break and lead 3-0. That break resulted decisive for Thiem to win the set (6-3) as there were no other breaks.

Dominic failed to serve out the set when leading 6-5 to be broken at 15.

”This was really one of these special matches, what I’ve practiced all my life for, all my childhood for. “Really epic one in an amazing atmosphere, beating a legend of our game. And also I’ve qualified for the semi-finals, which is the best.

Coming back from 1/4 in thebreaker was a little bit of luck, but it was an unbelievable match and one I’ll never forget. Novak is the best player in the world and I had to do something special.”

Djokovic’s comments

Novak was as gracious as ever in defeat to comment:

“I thought he deserved to win. He just played very courageous tennis and [was] just smacking the ball. He went for broke. The entire match he played the same way he played the last point. I have to put my hat down and congratulate him because he just played a great match.”
