ATP Rankings: Federer about to break the 300 weeks record

Djokovic is aiming at being world no.1 by year end and he is should obtain that, but Federer is once again close to another incredible record.

To date Roger has been world no.1 for a whopping 299 weeks and he is really close to make it 300 (that sounds very nice!)

How can Roger achieve the 300 mark?

Not difficult, actually that should be very easy for Roger (that’s why he couldn’t miss Shanghai).

Federer has now 11.805 pts vs. Nole’s 10.970. This means that the Swiss Maestro is 835pts above the Serb. Since none of them played last year in Shanghai, the 835pts gap is the starting point (as they would not “lose” any point from last year).

In order to be sure about breaking this record, Roger has just to reach the quarters (180pts) . In fact, If Nole wins this tournament he will get 1000pts and … 1000pts-180pts = 820pts, so the rankings after this week would be 11.985pts (Roger) vs. 11.970 (Nole).

So that is about reaching the quarterfinal and beating Zhang in the 2nd round (not a mission impossible) and than probably his dear friend Wawrinka.

All these calculation are meaningless if Djokovic does not win Shanghai. In this case Roger would rech the 300 mark anyway as the runner-up wins only 600pts (not enough to bridge the actual 835pts gap).

What about the rest of the pack?

In the “normal” ranking there are not major changes, maybe the most notable one is that Tsonga did overtake Berdych for the sixth position and Nadal keeps on losing points because of his injury.

Race to London

The most interesting part is the Race to London or YTD rankings. In fact, there are many players that can still qualify for the prestigious World Tour Finals  since there are many doubts that Rafa can recover to play the Masters, achieving the 9th poistion can be enough to qualify for London (as there are 8  available spots).

Tsonga is just there (8th place) and the other players are aiming at overtaking Tipsarevic (no.9). So the race is still open for Almagro, Monaco, Gasquet, Raonic, Isner, Cilic, Simon …. but they should do something really amazing to get there.
